Diary of a Middle Aged Ebiker day E-minus 1

Monday:   Drove the Hiace Van to work. Dropped the kids at school near home and drove in traffic for 38 minutes. Preston to Collingwood and back (9km from suburb to near City). Lower back pinched nerve causing knee ache.  Needed van to pick up scooter for client.

charging

BELOW ARE SOME QUICK CALCULATION THAT MAY COME IN HANDY WHEN I COMPLETE THIS BLOG.

HIACE – At around 15L/100km open road. = 4 litres fuel per commute.

At 2.7 kg greenhouse gasses per litre, the daily Hiace commute produces around 10kg of stuff.

Mains electricity from the worst source (burning brown coal) produces about 1kg/kwh.

Charging the ebike uses 120 Watts. for 4 hours (.5kwh)

SO… a full charge of my ebike in a country which (disgracefully) still uses coal for power will cause 500 Grams of greenhouse gas. (and cost 8cents).

I can commute 40km on electric only (no effort) per charge with my current setup (big bloke, stuffed knee, big motor) which equates to .25 kg greenhouse per commute. Naturally when the ratio of renewable to fossil fuel energy improves, so does the emission factor.

Hiace: 10KG Greenhouse gas, $6.00, 63 minutes.

Ebike with No pedalling: 0.25KG, $0.08, 38 minutes cruising.

Ebike in Countries (such as Scotland) with 100% renewables: 0KG
